“It’s our choices that matter in the end. Not wishes, not words, not promises.” – Alexandra Bracken
Do I really need to write anything after that quote? This could be the shortest post I’ve ever written…But alas, you know I can’t keep from sharing my thoughts. It’s too interesting a concept to just skip by without digging deeper.
As I look back on the past several years of my life, I often see two very different narratives at play: (1) the numerous dreams I once had; (2) the choices I made that brought me to the here and now.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve pursued many of my dreams. Yet, we from time to time look back and see some of the choices we made, wishing for a re-do. Is it just me? Don’t we sometimes wish that life was like a Word document? Click. Undo. Redo.
I’m going to be brutally vulnerable with you for a sec: some of my greatest regrets haunt me at night when it’s quiet and I’m alone, just me and my thoughts…Other regrets crash the party when I see someone else living the dreams I once held close. Still, other regrets seem to linger over choices I made that appeared so simple, yet were ultimately life-changing (I just didn’t know it at the time).
So…What’s my point?
We all have regrets that haunt us. Yet, what if we could choose to create a better future, regardless of the regrets and the I-wish-I-did’s of the past? What if our choices today create the reality we face tomorrow?
“Do you see your life as something you create? Or do you see your life as something that is happening to you?” – Rob Bell
How do you see your life? Do you believe that you can create who you become by your choices?
When you woke up this morning, did you choose the Special K or the Lucky Charms for your breakfast of champions? As you were in school or at work, did you devote your full attention to the task at hand, or did you simply pass through the day apathetic and disengaged? When you got home, did you choose to invest time in what’s most important, or did you watch “The Bachelor”? (Yes, I do loathe that show…Just don’t talk about “The Walking Dead”. That is educational and full of apocalyptic wisdom, just in case things go south…)
Your choices in each moment of each day create the results of what comes next.
You are becoming who you choose to create.
What if, instead of looking back on our regrets and hating ourselves, we allowed our regrets to push us to make better decisions in the here and now?
Do you think you could wake up tomorrow feeling different about yourself based on a few decisions you make today?
We all have regrets, but we also have a choice to create a better future.
Who will you choose to become?
