“Stop and smell the coffee.” – Anonymous
When was the last time you stopped and noticed that you were breathing? When was the last time you paused to be fully present in that moment? Maybe you’re at a coffee shop while reading this. Have you breathed deeply of the aroma pouring forth from the sacred bean, praising the Lord for His blessing of the elixir of life?
Daily life often consumes me so much that I often forget: I’m alive and that is a preposterous miracle!
There’s a strange magic surrounding the experience of traveling that reminds us of our humanity. A few years ago, I flew to New York to pursue a career opportunity that I had worked incredibly hard to obtain. During the weekend I explored, met random people in coffee shops, and enjoyed catching up with a few friends who lived in the city. And yet, that is not the first memory that comes to mind…
Doors were shut. The opportunities that I worked so hard to achieve completely vanished. On my last night in the city I found myself at Starbucks in Times Square, sitting in the far corner of the store as I broke down in an emotional wreck. It was in that moment that I was reminded that I was just one dude surrounded by millions of people, many of whom were pursuing the same career. My life was just a teardrop in the rain of space and time, yet the eternal God was still with me in the corner of that coffee shop. I was alive – wide awake – in a city of blinding lights.
“You see the people behind me? They are rushing to work and not paying attention to anything. Sometimes we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to take the time out to enjoy the beauty in life. It’s like we’re zombies. Look up and take your head phones out. Say Hi to someone you see and maybe give a hug to someone who looks like they’re hurting. Help out someone. You have to live every day like it’s your last. What people don’t know about me is that I had depression a couple of years back. I never told anyone about it. I had to fight my way out of depression. The person who was holding me back from my happiness was ME. Every day is precious so let’s treat it like that. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, so live today!” – Keanu Reeves
Wise words from Neo. (For those of you without good taste in film, watch “The Matrix”)
Right now, I’m sitting at my desk writing, breathing in the aroma of an incredible candle (thanks Mom-in-law), and listening to soundscapes music to put me in “the writer zone” like a typing Steph Curry. Just stopping to think about where I am, what I’m doing, and how I’ll never be in this moment again is just insane, yet fascinating!
When was the last time you paused to celebrate the miracle that you are alive?
Has it crossed your mind that you are a but a tear in the rain of time, yet the Son of God still died for you to become fully alive? We are but dust, yet God has placed eternity in our hearts and calls us by name!
“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’” – Psalm 46:10
It’s often in stillness & deafening silence that God reminds us of our desperate need for Him. When we pause to acknowledge that every breath is an act of grace, that changes everything.
When was the last time you paused?
