“Quit thinking the battle for your heart will be a fair fight.” – Bob Goff
I love. I hate. I give. I take. I dream. I fear. I create. I destroy.
What complex creatures we humans are. We were created for good, but we chose to rebel by embracing what is evil. We were designed for love, but hate comes so easily when we are wronged. What is wrong with us? Where did we lose ourselves?
“It happens so regularly that it’s predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God’s commands, but it’s pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge.” – Romans 7:21-23 MSG
When we, as humanity, chose darkness over light, we died inside. It’s a harsh truth, but I can’t deny it. I’ve seen the darkness inside myself far more than I care to admit.
Some of you may wonder why I believe in Jesus. This is why. I need redemption. My soul longs for life, not death. My heart is desperate for what is good, what is true, and what is eternal. Jesus is all that makes sense to me.
There’s a myth that comes from modern Christianity that I want to debunk. We hear, “If you trust Jesus with your life, you won’t struggle with sin any longer!” Such trash. Yet, if that’s the case, then what is true for those of us who follow Jesus?
We are at war. War with ourselves. War between the darkness and the light within.
We have a tendency to blame others for our faults – even the devil. In reality, we can be led to water, but we can’t be forced to drink. The dead man and woman within ourselves is the one we are at war with during this journey called life.
How do we win this fight? Are we doomed?
“I’ve tried everything and nothing helps. I’m at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? Isn’t that the real question? The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does. He acted to set things right in this life of contradictions where I want to serve God with all my heart and mind, but am pulled by the influence of sin to do something totally different.” – Romans 7:24-25 MSG
You aren’t fighting this war alone. The One who created all things fights with you and for you.
As we go about our days, I encourage you to keep your guard against, well…yourself. Examine your heart and examine your motives. Seek a life of goodness, beauty, creativity, and love.
The grace of the Father is strong enough. Trust His heart.
