“From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.” – Galatians 6:17
I don’t quite know why, but I’ve always been drawn to the conflicted rebel in every story, whether it be Raphael of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Daryl on The Walking Dead, Winston Smith in the novel “1984”, the prophet Jeremiah in the Scriptures, Neo in the Matrix, or any other number of underdog rebels fighting “the system”.
I’m not trying to be cool, because honestly, being a conflicted rebel isn’t a true rebel. A true rebel would be The Joker from Batman, Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter, Darth Vader from Star Wars, Mr. Smith from the Matrix, and Judas from the Scriptures. They were true rebels because they turned their backs on what they knew to be good, true, and loving.
A conflicted rebel, on the other hand, is someone who knows that they will be very unpopular when going against a twisted system, but they choose to do what is right, regardless of the consequences. The Matrix would have been extremely boring had Neo chosen the blue pill of ignorance, rather than the red pill of the difficult reality that his world was a fraud. I’m glad he chose the red pill, because that trilogy was freakin’ awesome! “Mr. Anderson…”
Most of my life, I’ve been blown away by how many people rebel against God, truth, love, grace, mercy, and compassion, as if they are being “different” and rebelling against society.
The truth is, if you really want to be different, be honest, love compassionately, give generously, and always seek truth…This is real counter-culture.
Mainstream culture and society push the agendas of greed, survival of the fittest, material consumption, hedonism, self-worship, indifference, addiction to pleasure, and a disregard for seeking the truth. I’m sorry, but turning your back on what is good and chasing after what is contrary is merely fitting in with the already-rebellious, twisted system, not conflicted rebellion against it.
I want to be a rebel with a cause – a life lived intentionally to bring hope, truth, life, and love to a world that is desperately craving what is real. I want to wear the mark of Christ on my chest, identifying with the One who died for a desperately depraved humanity.
Wouldn’t it be incredible if this generation became rebels with a cause, creating a NEW culture, a NEW social framework, and a NEW heart for seeking the eternal God? Wouldn’t that be insane!
Rebels with a cause…Maybe they’ll make a movie about us one day…
